About The Half Breed (Secret Fires) by Bobbi Smith
SECRET FIRES
In the midst of the vast, windswept Texas plains stands a ranch wrested from the wilderness with blood, sweat and tears. It is the shining legacy of Thomas McBride to his five living heirs. But along with the fertile acres and herds of cattle, each will inherit a history of scandal, lies and hidden desire that threatens to burn out of control.
THE HALF-BREED
Chase knows he has no legitimate claim to the Circle M. After all, his father made it painfully clear he wants nothing to do with his bastard son or the Comanche girl he once took to his bed. But Chase has his own reasons for answering Tom McBride’s deathbed summons. He has a job to do as a Texas Ranger, and a woman to protect—a woman whose sweet innocence gives him new faith that love born in the darkest night can face the dawn of all his tomorrows.
A Note From The Author
Why I Love Secret Fires – The Half-Breed
The Secret Fires series was the first series I’d ever participated in. I had been on a book tour with my friends Constance O’Banyon, Elaine Barbieri and Evelyn Rogers, and as we were driving around the country promoting our books, we came up with the idea of doing a series together. What a great idea!
It wasn’t easy, because we were different kinds of writers, but we did it. (By different kinds of writers I mean some of us were “pantsers”—as in, we make up the story up as we write it—and some of us need a complete outline before getting started.) Our premise for the series was: Tom McBride learns he is dying and demands through his lawyer that his alienated children return to the ranch or be dis-inherited.
My book The Half-Breed is the second in the series. My hero is Chase McBride, the illegitimate, half-breed son of Tom McBride. I love heroes who face big challenges and overcome them, and Chase definitely does that. As the story opens, Chase is a Texas Ranger. Having been separated from his father for most of his life, he wants nothing to do with the man, but when he learns the outlaw gang he’s after could be hiding in the town near the ranch, he uses the excuse of his father’s ill health as his cover to go there and track them down.
On the way, he saves our heroine, Faith Bryant, who’d been taken captive by a Comanche raiding party. I love strong heroines, too, and Faith keeps up with Chase, that’s for sure. Returning to his father’s ranch, Chase is reunited with a family he never knew, and of course, he catches the bad guys!
Secret Fires: The Half-Breed is the book that put me on the New York Times bestseller list! It was so exciting when I got the phone call from my publisher telling me the news! I will always remember that day. What an honor!

Chase was ready for trouble and trouble was exactly what he got when he snared the would-be horse thief around the waist. The thief put up a fierce struggle, but only when Chase heard the scream did he realize he was dealing with a woman!
“Hold still!” he commanded.
Fighting with all her strength, it took Faith a moment to realize he’d spoken English. Only when she was slammed back against the solid, hard-muscled width of his chest and held pinned there, did she become aware that this was no ordinary renegade.
“Damn it woman! I said hold still!” Chase groundout, wondering how this golden-haired wildcat of a woman had ended up in his camp trying to steal his horse in the middle of the night.
He looked down at her as she finally stilled in his arms. Only now did he notice that her blouse was torn and her pale flesh was bared to his gaze. She was filthy and there were bruises evident upon her flesh. They were a silent testimony to abuse she’d suffered. He wondered who she was and what had happened to bring her to him.

Hi Everybody!
Bridgett, I’m so glad you like the cover art. It was always exciting when I got copies of my cover from my publisher a few months before the books came out.
Also, I don’t know if you ever read Romantic Times Magazine, but they had a big book lovers convention every year and had a cover model contest there. 🙂 That was fun.
