Giving Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving! I realize it’s not quite time for turkey, but every day has plenty of room for gratitude. It’s natural that some days you take your blessings for granted, other days they haul off and smack you upside the head.

Our daughter was on her way to a quidditch tournament with a van full of her team mates when they got tangled in a deer-induced pile up on the Interstate. That first phone call, with sirens blaring in the background, will be with me forever. The only words I could understand through her tears and shock were, “We’re okay. Everyone’s okay.”

It was enough to have me giving thanks.

She goes to college fifteen hours away from home and she’s a capable, brilliant young woman, so I don’t worry. Too much. Not with the day to day stuff.

But when trouble strikes – even trouble that isn’t nearly as back as it could have been – I’m basically helpless. So I give thanks for the parents who live close enough to help out my daughter and her team mates, getting them safely back to the school.

Moments like this one offer a chance to remember with vivid clarity what matters most.

I’m looking forward to having the kids home, to hugging my daughter until she wants to throw me out a window, to the terrific bonus of sharing our holiday with extended family and friends. We’re planning movies, and food, and holiday decorating, and food, and holiday shopping, and yes… probably more food.

And I’ll be saying thank you for every minute of it.

Give thanks for the adventure!
