Check out this lovely bit of prose by Ellen Goodman that I discovered while shopping for quotes about rest and relaxation… and be sure to read through for details on your chance to win Dangerous Desires!
What do I want to take home from my summer vacation? Time. The wonderful luxury of being at rest. The days when you shut down the mental machinery that keeps life on track and let life simply wander. The days when you stop planning, analyzing, thinking and just are. Summer is my period of grace.
~Ellen Goodman
It got me thinking about my own summer plans. Time is a precious commodity and it seems we all try to save a bit more of it for ourselves during the summer months.
When I was growing up, my family made an annual trek to Colorado Springs for Family Camp sponsored by our church. Those weeks are packed with some of the best memories of my childhood. There was a snowstorm in July one year, trips to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and the Air Force Academy, gorgeous sunsets, and plenty of general camping fun.
While a family vacation is a delightful idea, the reality is it’s a pipe dream with our children doing research at universities far from home this summer.
Hmmm, maybe that means my husband and I will get away for a weekend just the two of us… It’s a longshot, but not entirely out of the qusestion. He’ll soon return from a deployment in Afghanistan and we’ll just have to see how he feels about traveling once he’s home safe.
Really, as I look to the summer schedule, 2013 has become one of those awkward years. But our family histrory shows the awkward years aren’t a total loss. We’ll squeeze in time here or there for a day trip to the beach or (hopefully) a weekend in the mountains to relax. Just because the big formal getaway is out, it doesn’t mean we won’t create plenty of fun.
Professionally, I’m looking forward to the RWA conference to catch up with my author pals. I have so many good friends in the industry and this will be my first conference in a long time.
The event is naturally a busy time (and a time for business), but it’s a different kind of busy than the typical day – which adds an element of fun, excitement, and a bit of rest and relaxation to the overall equation.
Just for fun, leave me a comment about your favorite summer getaway and I’ll choose a winner to receive the new Dangerous Desires box set when it’s available July 1!
