Writer Wednesday #26

It’s Independence Day in the U.S. and in that vein, I want to encourage you to seize your independence as a writer.

When, where and how you write is as individual as a fingerprint. A room full of writers, given the same prompt will offer up a room full of diverse stories. That’s an awesome testament to creativity and individual perspective.

If you want to write well (and enjoy the process) you must not let gremlins of doubt or criticism invade or disrupt your writing time. I’m well aware that it’s easier said than done. Trust me, at least once during every project I wrestle with the notion that someone will jump out of the woodwork, look over my shoulder and declare the whole mess on the screen utter crap.

To be fair, my black cat (aka the writing assistant) is often nearby during my writing time. And when he does plant himself where he can read over my shoulder, he’s wearing a look of extreme boredom. This is the moment I remind myself cats aren’t editors. (Thank goodness, since I often add dogs to my stories.)

When you sit down to write, focus on the words, scenes, or chapters there with you in the present moment, rather than the ‘what-ifs’ of the end result. Consider how you want your reader to feel and write to that specific point, without worry or concern about the details of publication, and reviewer reception. Those concerns will come in time, but only if you finish the story or project.

As so many authors have said, you can’t edit a blank page. They’re right. I will add it’s much easier to edit and revise the project if you’ve written the draft as only you can. Sure, you need to get inspired by authors you admire, who’s books resonate with you. As long as you remember that no one else can write your book. Embrace that, let that knowledge comfort and reassure you in your writing time.

Yes, blocking out fears and embracing your independence as a writer takes consistency and practice, but it’s worth the effort to explore how you best get the words on the page, what you love to write, and what makes your writing unique.
