Writer Wednesday #32

When you think of success as a writer, do you have a destination in mind?

“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” -Arthur Ashe

This quote is so appropos for a writing life. We can learn something valuable from every single effort, no matter the outcome.

When I started my journey as a published author, I had immediate and long term goals and the extensive vision boards to support them. That’s a good thing and I encourage you to do something similar. It’s smart to know where you want to end up.

It’s also essential to realize that success of any kind, in any endeavor, is really about the journey toward that end point. What we learn along the way fuels us, empowers us, and prepares us for the next step.

Are you flexible enough to bend and adjust during low moments? Are you humble enough to realize the highs are fleeting?

Doing the writing, making time to get words on the page every day, is the essential step to discovering what we know, what stories are deep in our hearts, and how we want to share those insights and tales with our audience. Getting bogged down with the destination or outcome of the work can derail our time with the words, characters, and message.

First and foremost, keep your focus on the writing. It’s the only piece of the journey writers have control over. That’s where the joy is, that’s where the mastery is developed. Write first, always!
