Writer Wednesday #46

Do you have a plan for your writing in 2019?

Plan the work, work the plan.

There’s no wrong answer here – it really depends on what you want to get from your writing.

If you’d like to publish your work in 2019, or take steps toward publication (like finding an agent or a publisher) you need to set a target and make a plan to get there. Publishing is a crazy business, it always has been, and there are several factors outside of your control. In fact writing is the only factor you can control in a publishing career (unless you’re the publisher, but more on that in a later post).

Take some time and really think about what you want from your writing. Is this a soul-nourishing hobby? A legacy to leave your children? Or do you have dreams of booksignings for lines of fans and the NYT bestseller list?

Whatever you want, you can get closer to that goal if you make a plan and keep at it day by day. Any writing career or goal begins with you and the words of course, so whatever your plan, don’t skimp or shortchange your writing time. That way lies disaster (this is my voice of experience talking). “A nonwriting writer is a monster courting insanity.”  -Franz Kafka

Once you’ve decided what you want, you can find wonderful tools and resources for mapping out a path to your goals. Setting writing goals isn’t that different from setting any other kind of goal and making the decision to go for it is often the biggest hurdle!

Be honest with yourself about what you want and never be afraid to dream big! My top recommendations for developing your goalsetting strategy would be Sarra Cannon, author and creator of the Heart Breathings channel on You Tube or one of the excellent books from James Scott Bell.
