Writer Wednesday #55

Writing can be a tricky endeavor as we learn how and when to let imagination run free and when and how to rein in those ideas.

Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.

-Dorothy Parker

No matter what you’re writing, as you develop ideas and ways to engage your audience, you need to get those words on the page. In the rough draft, just writing forward is often the best time investment.

Giving your creativity full freedom can be scary at first and it can be difficult not to get too far ahead of yourself. Don’t let worry over the final product impede the growth of your wilder notions.

You need that crazy wild ride to grow as an author. In the rough draft, the best thing you can do is give those wild ideas some room to grow and lead you in new, dynamic directions.

Embracing your creativity means being daring enough to let ideas flow where they will and trusting yourself to wrangle them into something coherent that will entertain or inform your reader later.

The balancing act between writing with abandon and trusting yourself to shape things up takes practice, so if an idea feels too wild or uncomfortable in the draft, don’t fight it. If you need to set a time limit on the wild tangent.

As Neil Gaiman says, above all else write for yourself and write the story you want to read.
