Ask Regan July 2020

Question: Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Our grand-puppy’s demonstration of how I feel after writing an emotional scene…

Answer: The last few months (and likely the months ahead) have been a strange time for everyone and this question has been a particular focus lately.

Not because I’m reassessing my career or anything that dramatic. More because I feel like I’m entering a new stage, one where I can be choosy about my projects. My author friend, Vicki Hinze, said she refuses to take on any project or write a book she doesn’t love and that has inspired me.

Every day is a little different on the writing front, a fact I accepted years ago (not every day will feel productive) but that reality is exacerbated in our current circumstances, so writing happier scenes or more lighthearted stories keeps me feeling energized.

Of course, some scenes (the emotional ones) wipe me out and some books are overall more exhausting than others. Sometimes it’s due to the storyline and sometimes it’s thanks to life surrounding me in the process of crafting a book.

What I’ve learned about myself is that if I have any sort of writing progress in a day, I feel better about everything, so that’s the short answer: Writing energizes me. Whether it’s one thousand or three thousand new words on a book in any given day, I feel more upbeat and positive about my work and myself.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July! And leave me a comment and let me know if your work energizes or exhausts you.

Live the adventure!
