Regan Black: Continuing my interview of Petra Neiman, an extraordinary woman, as she offers her view of the differences between psychic and empathic talents.
RB: What’s the real difference between psychic and empathic?
P: “People like labels, don’t they?” She laughs again. “Standard thought is psychics read minds or tell the future. I don’t read minds so much as people. I wear gloves because I pick up on memories by touch, especially if those memories evoke powerful emotions.
“But I don’t have the ability to look at you and read your thoughts, hopes or plans. I can’t see the future and I can’t think of someone and just tap into them telepathically and have a conversation.” She tapped the cell card sitting on the arm of the couch. “I use this as much, or more than, you do.”
RB: Are any of those gifts you’ve mentioned real?
P: “As real as your breath.”
RB: But most people don’t credit the power of the mind like you do.
P: “Most people don’t tap into the majority of the power they hold.”
RB: I’m inexplicably nervous and trying not to fidget. Petra’s pleasant demeanor is a lovely layer over something more, something deeper to her. It’s impossible to overlook and just as impossible to label it.
RB: People say you can fly.
P: “People are silly. Though it would be fun. What I can do, is difficult to explain, but I promise you, I’ve never even levitated at a magic show.”
RB: So what’s next for you?
P: “Family. Gideon and I are thrilled with our little girl and planning to give her all the brothers and sisters she can stand. There’s nothing like the wonder of a child to make you appreciate life. I want to be there for her, and her future siblings, every step of the way.”
RB: So you’re done with crime fighting?
P: “Are criminals done? Of course not. I’ll continue to assist my sister, the CRIA, and my husband as much as I can. And continue to help others along the way.”
RB: Where do you think Kristoff is hiding?
P: “Hiding? I thought he was dead.”
RB: You’re suggesting we accept the government statement?
Petra only smiles, full of secrets and opinions she has no intention of sharing today. I tried another tack. What’s your favorite primary color?
P: “Red.”
RB: Why?
P: “The pure energy of it. The potential and the power. It’s vibrant.”
And quiet, reserved Petra is just as vibrant as her favorite color.
