Question: Do you have Thanksgiving traditions?
Answer: Quite a few, actually. And most of them will be on hold this year, by necessity. But we’ll gladly deal with being apart now so we can all be together later.
When my parents divorced my mom turned Thanksgiving into our big holiday and Dad and his side of the family laid claim to me for the better part of Christmas.
Mom and I (and later my husband and our kids) would travel to the Amana Colonies in Iowa for a long weekend. For years, the family at the Brickhaus would serve us amazing breakfasts each day and a Thanksgiving feast on Thursday afternoon.
We’d spend hours walking nature trails, exploring the unique shops and chatting with artisans from woodworkers to bakers. We’d also take one day at the nearby outlet mall for a more typical shop to you drop experience.
Now, my husband and I usually host Thanksgiving with family and friends. He cooks the turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and the rest of us handle the side dishes and desserts.
On Friday we decorate the house for Christmas and read through fabulously entertaining Christmas-wish letters from our kids. (Our son is the reigning champ for snark and outrageous-ness).
This year I might just decorate early. 2020 needs as much holiday cheer as possible, in my opinion.
Saturday is usually craft night where we make decorations for the tree or otherwise unplug for a bit. And Sunday I’m usually a bit subdued because everyone has to head out to their own lives again.
But it’s so worth it for those precious days of conversation, laughter, new treats and old favorites and creating new memories.
Live the adventure!
