Autumn Delights

Woohoo! October has arrived and the weather around here finally agrees with the calendar. We’ve had a glorious ‘cold snap’ and brisk wind that blew in a refreshing rain. I even needed a light sweater today! (rumor has it we’ll see 80 for a high again in a few days, but hey, I’m all about enjoying the moment).

This has to be one of my favorite times of the year. Growing up, October meant crisp nights at football games and lazy weekend afternoons with a picnic and a fabulous clear blue sky of Indian summer.

When my kids were small I decorated for every season and I used to hit it big on October 1 to get the most bang out of our Halloween decorations.  We always went with a ‘friendly spook’ sort of theme for Halloween (a certified wimp with an over-active imagination here, I avoid the horror side of Halloween).

But now, with both kids off at school, and my head buried in the books I want to get written and out to readers, I almost forgot it’s time to break out the pumpkins, my Halloween welcome wreath, and the friendly spider windsock.

Of course with so many real spiders lurking about on my porch at this time of year… but I digress.

I did get the Halloween wreath up and I’ll enjoy the next 26 days of it. The small pumpkin candy jar (no kids, remember?) was the better choice for the kitchen this year. And the super-cool dancing ghost tea light holder is on the mantel. It’s not nearly as elaborate as I used to be, but hey, it’s a new stage for me.

Now, even if the weather turns warm again (an Indian summer around here is really summer-ish) I’ll be in the spirit of the season – which is great for me as well as my muse!

What do you do to celebrate seasonal changes this time of year?

I’m with you for cool days of autumn. I become the domestic diva cooking all means of apples: pies, breads and applesauce. The smell of apples cooking makes everything smell so cozy. And did I mention apple cider?

Oh, I have such fond memories of cooking home made applesauce with my mom. Thanks for stopping by, SaraMarie!
