Having been under deadline pressure with several fiction and non-fiction projects through the first half of this year, I’ve experienced first hand why J.K. Rowling turned chocolate into the ‘healing’ booster food after a Dementor encounter.
Hemingway said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
At the end of a writing day, after ‘bleeding’ into my story or topic, I’ve discovered nothing is quite as renewing as chocolate. Sure I work qi gong and yoga breaks into my writing time and I live for the challenge and renewal of my daily workout.
But chocolate… ahh, chocolate.
While I confess I’ve always had a sweet tooth, using chocolate as a ‘writing tool’ is a new way to look at an old friend. 😉
Brilliant Husband has learned to keep good dark chocolate truffles on hand for my afternoon pick-me-up. A little goes a long way and taking the time to sit and enjoy that one fabulous truffle melting in my mouth somehow fills the well that the writing process drains.
Like J.K. Rowling did in Harry Potter – it’s a magical restorative process.
Yes, I still keep a jar of Reese’s Pieces on my desk to keep me fueled with happiness during the editing process. It also helps keeps me from pulling out my hair when formatting or something else threatens to dull the shine of my day.
But oh, that one fabulous truffle. It’s a reward. A refresher. A rejuvenating boost after expending all that creative energy.
I think at this point, I can almost list the truffles a business expense.
Are you a chocolate fan or is there another treat that restores you?
