Writing Through The Fear

With every novel I write, there’s a point of fear and oddly enough that point shifts every time.

fear post-reganIt used to happen at the dead center of the novel, but I’ve overcome that typical low. Then it would hit me at ‘the end’ as I wondered what I’d left off the page this time.

Sometimes it’s the setting, other times I fear I’ll miss the mark on a character and cheat my readers. It doesn’t matter how I plan, how I plot- or more likely – how I don’t plot.

Do you know how many novels it took before I accepted it would always be something that leaped out and scared me? It took me years to let myself just ride it out – or more correctly to write it out.

The only solution I’ve found is writing through the part that scares me and putting the words on the page so they can be examined, improved, and polished on the next pass.

Writing through the point of fear has boosted my courage and strength when I’m in the story. More importantly, writing it out fosters the belief and confidence that I will prevail over that moment this time and next time too.

That point of fear, wherever it happens, makes every journey from idea to finished project interesting.

Unless, of course, you have to live with me during that inevitable moment when I am at the edge of panic wondering why I call myself an author. (Kudos to my family and pets for hanging in there)
