Q&A with Kenzie
It’s a pleasure to host this brief interview with Kenzie Macallan, author of Edges today!
RB: How do you name your characters?
KM: I like to look for or come up with unique names for my characters. Sometimes the names have meaning for me. Marabella, the lead character in Truths, had to have a strong Italian name. She’s the oldest of the Luccenzo sisters and the anchor of their team. Her man, Mac, short for Macgregor, came from my trip to Scotland when I just connected with the family name and colors.
Leigha is the lead in Edges. She was named after a girl I knew in high school. I liked the name and its spelling. It’s a modern American version of Leah. The name means “languid relaxed, weary”. In some respects, this is the exact opposite of my character. She tends to be tightly wound.
The youngest sister, Raquelle, is a spelling I thought I came up with until I looked it up. I didn’t want her name to be Rachel. The hard ‘k’ sound fit more with her personality. The only other Raquelle was in Barbie: Life in Dreamhouse, the TV show. She was the antagonist trying to win over Ken but always failing at getting him. The name fits my character as Raquelle is described as having a posh lifestyle, self-centered and looks at herself a lot. You’ll have to wait and see if it holds true in Faces, Book 3.
RB: Do you like to plot or do you prefer to let the characters take the reins?
KM: I usually have the plot in my head. I used to start writing right away knowing my characters, the plot line, and the black moment(s). Now, I write out an outline that is very detailed. It includes elements such as character traits, both internal and external conflict, plotline, character arc, and black moments.
The characters also speak to me and give me advice on what I should write for them. It sounds crazy but most writers can relate to “the character voices”. They can even wake you up in the middle of the night wanting to be heard, forcing you to have a notebook and a pen nearby for any changes that you may need to make. I didn’t believe it until it happened to me. When you’re in the middle of writing the first draft, they are on you all the time.
RB: What was the most fascinating part of research for this book?
KM: The most fascinating part of the research for this book was getting to know Australia. It’s so far away from the east coast of the US; it might as well be another planet. It’s an interesting culture with amazing, strong people. Most of them love the ocean and are big into fitness, much more so than the US. They seem to take life in stride. The food they eat is interesting and may not be something I would enjoy.
I also had to find out about the agency comparable to the FBI called the ASIS. Dean, the lead male character in the book, is an ex-ASIS agent who was betrayed and working in New York City. His background includes ex-military as Black Ops then transitioned into an agent. After researching things about Australia, it wasn’t a big stretch to have him yearn to go back to his home country.
RB: How can fans learn more about your current and future books?
KM: Fans can learn more about my books in several ways. My website is www.kenziemacallan.com. I do have a newsletter but don’t send out a lot of emails. My goal is sending one out once a month. He said something to Leigha in a language she didn’t understand. His eyes glassed over. “My little angel,” he repeated in English.
Her nerves came undone at the sight before her. Was this the him her father warned her about? She tried to mask her fear. “How can I help you?” Her soft voice didn’t carry far in the empty space.
He stretched out his hand, motioning her to two chairs. “Please, come. Sit down. We have much to talk about. I mean you no harm.”
“Who are you?” The words forced out of her mouth of their own volition. She started to freak out. Her hands shook as she smoothed them over the top of her head.
She had no choice. The option to run left the minute his men locked the door to the studio. Something poked from the back of her brain. His face seemed familiar somehow, but she couldn’t quite place him.
They sat down across from each other in two oversized chairs. He leaned into her space with his forearms on his knees. Caging her in, he demanded her full attention. His eyes had lost their glassiness. He looked at her like a rare piece of artwork, tilting his head to the side.
“I have only ever seen you from a distance. You are even more beautiful up close.” He raised his hand to touch her face but then let it drop.
Jesus, he was a stalker.
