I’m on a kissing theme lately. I suppose it’s because I’ve been working toward the first kiss between a new couple so the topic tends to fill my thoughts as I work out the fine details. Kissing can be so many things – and one type of kiss can have wildly different impact in differing circumstances.
Men and women can exchange a wealth of emotion and intention with the placement and intensity of a kiss. A peck on the cheek can mean have a good day, I’m not interested, or I’m distracted.
A brush of lips to the forehead can signal more protective feelings, or even a blessing of sorts.
Who can forget the iconic photo of the sailor returned from WWII kissing the woman in the middle of a celebratory Times Square? It’s an image that sticks with you, that evokes emotion. That first meeting of lips in a romance novel should leave the same lasting impression.
In the movie The Princess Diaries Mia dreams of a romantic kiss that will make her foot ‘pop’ in the equivalent of a swoony sigh.
Those are the things I keep in mind as I write first kiss scenes, thinking of the romance of it, combing personal memories to recapture my own feelings, or favorite movie scenes that evoke those same emotions.
In my action-packed urban fantasy novels the emotional, romantic tangle is what makes those first kiss scenes such fun to write. Justice Incarnate was a unique delight because – being reincarnated – the first kiss as Jaden and Brian in 2096 was really only their most recent kiss. But it’s a kiss that changes everything for both of them.
Here’s a snippet:
“You don’t believe me?”
She didn’t care for his challenging tone. “I have reason to doubt you.”
“Same goes.” He came to his feet, crowding her.
Three ways to take him down came to mind immediately. All of them evaporated under the assault of his lips on hers. She matched his daring and raised with her passion. Pent up from centuries of abject longing, she poured herself into him.
He broke the kiss, but his mouth hovered so his words brushed her lips. “Trust me, Jaden.”
How absurd that her heart should want to leap from her chest. This was a physical ploy, nothing more. She knew it. She understood the game better than most.
Too bad she couldn’t recall the rules.
Do you have a favorite first kiss, or a favorite author who writes sigh-worthy first kisses?
