My favorite element of a paranormal romance novel is the mind. That is if I’m forced to name a favorite.
Alpha heroes (male and female) come from all walks of fiction life and show up in every element of paranormal novels, but those elements that focus on mental powers and talents tend to draw me more than others.
Don’t get me wrong. I have my favorites in other elements too. Shapeshifters are hot, vampires are powerfully cool, but the mind gives me hope.
Why? Mainly because we all have one and the way we use it to interpret our lives, in and out of books, makes the difference.
So many realms of possible and impossible lurk inside the mind for both the author and the reader.
As an author I like to explore the mind-power elements in a paranormal romance novel from both the heroic and villain viewpoints. How those skills help or hinder my own characters, and how the characters grow to handle their power within the challenges of the story.
Elements of paranormal romance novels that involve the mind mean creative freedom for an author, simply because while science has unraveled much, we probably won’t ever reach the end of the thread.
From telepathy to telekinesis, from seers to dreamers, the potential is wide and vast when the mind is engaged.
And when the characters in my paranormal romance novels have mental talents, if that’s the element I use, it adds immediate depth to the character development. Everyone has gifts and skills, (and the sooner we appreciate what makes us special the happier we’ll be).
But a character with ‘super’ powers has to know how and when to trust the talent. The character has to balance inherent gifts with knowledge, plus a character has to know how to dig deep, and when to rely on something or someone else.
The mind is fascinating, full of limitless potential! And when that fascinating potential is the element of a paranormal romance novel, the talented author has a wonderful gift to share with the reader.
