February is usually the coldest month around here, and the cold only lasts about a week. But it seems to have come a bit early this year. And twice – so far.

During our first cold snap, we had one pipe freeze, though I’d taken precautions in other areas of the house. I got it thawed out, but let me say hanging out in an attic space with a hair dryer isn’t my idea of fun. This time around, we prepared ALL of the faucets. Which means listening to a drippy faucet serenade all night long, but it’s worth it! 😉
As an avid reader, I admit all this cold weather makes me want to spend DAYS (as in until springtime) under a cozy quilt curled up with a good book and a hot beverage.
In the morning and when I’m writing I prefer coffee -and lots of it. Although recently I’ve started interrupting my morning coffee-fest with a cup of tea (recommended by my acupunturist). And tea always puts me in a mood for historical romances (which are my guilty pleasure). Afternoon writing sessions are often supported by a cup of cocoa, just to shake things up.
Lately, I’ve discovered a new to me author: Sarah MacLean. Her Rules of Scoundrels series: A Rogue By Any Other Name, One Good Earl Deserves a Lover, and No Good Duke Goes Unpunished are wonderful, emotional reads.
The heroines are brave and motivated and the heroes… well… the heroes are so very sigh-worthy! And I’ve been treating myself to reading binges on cold evenings – along with a cup of hot chocolate or tea depending on my mood.
While she was home, my daughter (who shares my joy of historical romances) kept urging me to read Suzanne Enoch’s Scandalous Brides series as well as the Duchess Diaries by Karen Hawkins.
Hawkins and Enoch have been favorites of ours for years. My daughter raves over the adorable pugs as supporting characters and she said so many good things about How to Pursue a Princess (Hawkins) and Rules to Catch a Devilish Duke (Enoch) it nearly gave me a writer’s complex.
Just kidding. While I’ve often wished I could write historical romance, I’ll stick with my forte of action-packed romantic suspense and paranormal romance, and continue to savor the historicals as a special treat.
Which do you prefer with your books on a cold day? Coffee, cocoa, tea… or something stronger?

Um, hello…coffee, always coffee. I’m digging historical western romances lately too. Just can’t beat a gunslinging cowboy. Have to read something while waiting for your next book to come out. 😉
