“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don’t feel I should be doing something else.” -Gloria Steinem
This is the feeling, the awareness, the absolute conviction we need to find in the writing time.
For those minutes or hours that you can invest in the project, the world needs to fall aside so you can completely connect with your story and message.
It isn’t easy – we know as adults that nothing worthwhile is easy – and it starts by claiming those minutes or hours for yourself. Shut off the phone, wear earplugs or use your headset to dial into inspiring music and just breathe into the words that need to come from your heart and land on the page.
Yes, we all have responsibilities to the people we love, and we often need a reminder that we have an equal responsibility to ourselves. Writing is in fact a form of self care, whether we’re writing for publication or for ourselves. And self-care is not selfish. For writers, people who feel compelled to share thoughts and insights in written form, it’s essential to good health.
Start with a few minutes at a time if you need to, but practice this investment in yourself – take this special time when you just let the world and other pressures fall away so you can sink into the message or story inside you.
Live the adventure!
