Perfection issues can be a real detriment to your writing process and progress. Perfectionism can sprout from all kinds of internal sources and insecurities. (Hello, we’re writers, insecure happens).
“Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.” -Michelangelo
For me, the best way through a perfectionism hang up is to keep on writing. It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned mistakes can be fixed – a blank page cannot.
Our job as writers isn’t to be perfect. Especially not in the first draft. When you sit down to write, the focus should be on putting the words onto the page in the order that seems best at the time. You can make those words better – later – in the revisions.
Remember to relax and let your unique voice and message shine through your words during your writing time. It’s the imperfections that make us, make art, and make an impact.
Just like we need to stop comparing our rough drafts with finished books, stop measuring yourself against people who have a different life experience than you. The words will flow more freely when you embrace what makes you and the story you have to share so special.
If perfection issues are making you tense and interrupting your writing time and derailing your writing goals, try nipping it with a quick affirmation: “My writing flows freely when I invest my heart and my time.” That’s just one example of course… feel free to develop your own and post it as a comment if you like.
