As the holidays approach, it’s easy to let our writing goals slip to the sidelines. It’s also natural to want to spend time with loved ones we may not see often enough.
Always find time for the things that make you happy to be alive.
That excellent reminder applies to the way we celebrate the holiday season and it should be equally applicable to our writing. So how do you find the balance?
The answer is as individual and unique as each of us are as writers. Walking away from your writing habit without a plan can derail your momentum and make it challenging to get back into the mood or the tone of your project – which is a real problem if you have deadlines looming in December or January.
To maintain your momentum and enthusiasm for your writing project, I recommend coming up with a daily minimum (be it a hundred words or a thousand) and making time to stick with that. If more time opens up, great, but at least take the time you need to stay in touch with your writing.
You might even be better served by reviewing your notes on your current project and simply letting ideas mull in the back of your mind as you enjoy the extra opporutinity and activities of the holiday season.
Another great option -assuming you don’t have a hard deadline- is to work on something completely different during the holiday crush and use your limited writing time to spark your creativity and refill the well.
However you decide to balance writing time and holiday time, it’s vital to be nice to yourself. We all need a break to refresh and recharge and if baking pies or roasting turkey fuels you, make time for it. Your writing time and productivity will most likely benefit after that break.
Live the writing adventure!
