Writing Wednesday #52

Every writer is different. We all have experiences that color our viewpoint and cast light and shadow on any number of topics.

“Writing is an exploration.” E.L. Doctorow

When we sit down to write, we’re exploring what we know and discovering what we have yet to learn. Not just about a topic, story, or characters, but about ourselves as well.

I’ve written nearly fifty novels since I started this journey. Most of those are published (or will be soon), but a couple of them will never see the light of day. For good reason.

It’s possible I could go back and fix those early novels now that I’ve learned so much about my process, the publishing process, and what readers expect in various genres. But whenever I think about doing that, I change my mind.

Keep moving forward is a happier mantra for me.

For me, those early books are better left collecting dust in the back corner of my closet. Why? Because they have more value to me as evidence of my learning curve. I’ve learned how I best craft a book. I’ve discovered my voice and my strengths and my joy.

With every project -every writing session really- I learn something about myself and my viewpoint. The research for my books is exciting and opens new paths. My characters challenge me to tell a better story. My support crew encourages me to be bold and bring my best to every book I publish.

It used to be scary, when the writing was going great and I was following what I knew, only to realize I had so much yet to learn. Now I see it as an opportunity. Not always comfortable, but always rewarding if I’m brave enough to explore it.

What are you exploring this week?
