Writer Wednesday #54

Most of us learn fairly quickly that experience, trial and error, and challenges are essential so we can grow as people. The same holds true for our writing journey.

Writing (like sailing or anything else) takes time. Not just time to put the words on the page, but time to learn the craft, grow in your message, and discover what type of story you want most to tell.

When you’re in the midst of ‘rough seas’ -be it a difficult writing project or a difficult time in life- it may seem impossible to find any value in the struggle. I promise, those challenging days will help and strengthen your process and your perspective.

Once you’re back on an even keel, it can be immensely helpful to take the time to reflect on the experience to see what you learned. Sometimes you can do that right away, but in many cases it may take a long while before you can look back with peace and confidence and see the benefit of a tough time.

Whether you’re in the midst of a challenging time or you’ve made it through, writing can help you sort things out and shift your perspective away from discouragement or frustration with a situation to focus on the benefits of that experience.

Remember, as a writer, you have the unique ability to share the wisdom gained by your experience with others, to ease their burden in the midst of a struggle and to help them recover from a rough time and so they too can grow stronger.

Writers can make that kind of impact through any genre, be it fiction or non-fiction. And to me, that’s the core of why we write, to improve or enrich someone’s corner of the world.

Live the writing adventure!
