If you sit down to write and the blank page feels intimidating, it might be time for an attitude assesment.
“You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.” -Oprah Winfrey
To paraphrase this quote for writers, you’re responsible for the energy you create for your writing and the energy you bring to your work. It might seem obvious, but it really isn’t.
It sure isn’t simple to sit down and write when you don’t feel like doing so.
There will be days that are phenomenal and days that downright suck. And yes, there are days when you’re better off not writing at all if the energy you’re bringing to the page is all wrong.
The trick to maintaining your productivity through the ups and downs of how you feel is being able to figure out what kind of day it is and get that energy right.
If it’s a truly off day, try writing something altogether different, just so you keep writing. That was Isaac Asimov’s approach. But if it’s merely a slow day, find ways to perk up your energy levels. Take a few minutes to journal or focus on something you love about your topic or character and make sure that gets on the page.
Sometimes the solution can be as simple as taking a step back from the computer for an energy reset. Try a brisk walk, a cup of coffee, a yoga break, the scent of peppermint oil or a bite of chocolate.
Discovering what works might take trial and error, and it might vary, but it’s worth it and it’s all part of developing your process as an author.
Live the writing adventure!
